In the rare old times, when
the dollar was strong, Dublin was easy on the pockets of american
travellers. Today, eating and sleeping well on the cheap is
just about as difficult as getting a pint after 11pm, but
it can still, thank goodness, be done.
In Dublin, as elsewhere in Ireland, bed-and-breakfast houses
and guesthouses are by far the best bets for low-cost comfort;
a list can be obtained from the Irish Tourist Board (757 Third
Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017: 212-418-0800; or Baggot Street
Bridge, Dublin 2; 747733.
For a uniquely Irish meal of Boxty, or filled potato pancakes,
try Gallagher's Boxty House (20-21 Temple Bar, Dublin 2; 6772762),
where the staff is young and energetic and the music is exclusively
Irish. For about $42, including a bottle of wine, a couple
can have bacon and cabbage or vegetarian boxty served with
two fresh vegetables, a dessert of homemade ice cream and
Bailey's Irish cream and Irish coffee. |
